Using a template

Templates help you start campaigns and journey emails with a consistent layout and brand. This guide shows how to pick a template in the template picker, where your saved templates appear, and how editor type and tags affect what you can choose.

In this guide, you'll find:

  1. When you pick a template
  2. Match the editor type
  3. Find your templates under Account templates
  4. Browse by tag
  5. Use a template
  6. FAQs

1 When you pick a template

The Select a template dialog opens when you:

  • Create a new campaign
  • Set up or change the content for a journey send email step

From that dialog you can start from a Tarvent design, one of your account templates, a previous campaign, or from scratch, depending on what you're creating.

2 Match the editor type

Before you choose a template, you select the preferred editor for the campaign or journey email. That choice controls which templates appear.

Common editor types include:

  • Standard — drag-and-drop editor
  • HTML Markup — code editor for HTML
  • Plain text — text editor
  • AMP Markup — code editor for AMP for Email
Important: The editor type of the template must match the editor type of the campaign or journey email. A Standard (drag-and-drop) template will not appear when you're creating an HTML Markup email, and the reverse is also true.

If you don't see a template you expect, confirm that it was saved with the same editor type you're using for this campaign or journey email.

3 Find your templates under Account templates

In the template picker, your own saved templates are listed under Account templates.

You'll typically see sections such as:

  • Standard templates — Tarvent-provided starting designs
  • Account templates — templates you (or your team) created and saved in Tarvent
  • Account campaigns — when available, previously created campaigns you can copy from

To reuse a design you've already built and saved as a template, open Account templates and select it from that list.

4 Browse by tag

When you tag a template, those tags appear under Account templates in the template picker. Click a tag name to show only the templates with that tag.

This is useful when you organize templates by brand, audience, or purpose (for example, "Newsletter", "Welcome", or "Promo"). A template with more than one tag can appear under each of those tags.

Tip: Use All under Account templates when you want to browse every account template for the selected editor type, then click a tag name when you want a shorter, filtered list.

5 Use a template

Here are the steps:

  1. Start creating a campaign, or open the journey send email step where you want to choose content.
  2. Select the editor type that matches the template you plan to use.
  3. In the Select a template dialog, open Account templates.
  4. Optionally click a tag name under Account templates to filter the list.
  5. Select the template, review the preview if shown, and continue.
  6. Finish the remaining campaign or journey email details, then edit the content as needed.

After you select a template, you can still change the content in the editor. The template is your starting point, not a locked final design (unless parts of it were marked read-only when the template was built).

6 FAQs

Where are my saved templates in the picker?
Look under Account templates. Standard templates are Tarvent designs. Your own templates are listed separately under Account templates.
Why don't I see my template?
Most often the editor type doesn't match. Choose the same editor type the template was created with (Standard, HTML Markup, Plain text, or AMP Markup), then check Account templates again. If the template is tagged, also try clicking the matching tag name or All.
How do tags help me find a template?
Tags you add to a template show as clickable names under Account templates. Click a tag name to filter the picker to templates with that tag.
Can I use the same template for a campaign and a journey email?
Yes, as long as the editor type matches. Account templates can be used when creating campaign content or journey send email content.
Where can I learn more about templates?
See Templates 101 for an overview of templates, and Creating a new campaign for the full campaign creation flow.
