Templates 101
Walkthrough
Did you know?
You can create templates from scratch or use a pre-built Tarvent template as your starting point.
You can use templates for campaigns, journey emails, confirmation emails, and transactional emails.
The template editor provides special "Transaction variable" tools that allow you to define where data will be merged from a transactional email call from your external systems.
Templates are not associated with a specific audience. Therefore, Tarvent only the standard contact fields are provided for data merge. However, if you know the audience merge field the template will be used for, you can always enter it manually.
You can edit all areas of the template using the template editor. However, you can mark rows, containers, and controls as read-only. You cannot edit read-only controls within a campaign, journey email, or other elements that use the template.
Statistics are provided at the top of the template editor to show how often the template is used and which draft campaigns (not sent yet) are using the template.
FAQs
Why use templates when I can create a campaign just as easily?
Templates help standardize branding, general content just as your footer, and the overall structure of your email campaigns to give your audience a familiar feel.
How can I use a template for a transactional email?
Transactional emails are typically initiated by an API call to Tarvent, telling Tarvent who to send the email to, which template to use, and the values for variable data to merge into the template. The transactional email API call results in an email, such as a confirmation email, being sent to one or more recipients of your transactional email API request.
Why can't I personalize my template with my additional data fields?
Multiple audiences can use templates to create email campaigns. As a result, only the standard contact fields are provided in the template editor. However, if you know the merge field name, you can manually type it in the template editor. Please note that merge fields added that do not have an associated data field will render as empty within a campaign email.
Can I categorize templates to control their display in the "New campaign" dialog?
Yes. Tarvent will group templates based on the tags associated with each template. If a template has more than one tag, the template will be displayed within each tag.
