The Split and paths overview step performs an action or controls flow inside a journey.
Step settings
Configure the step in the right-side editor, and click Save after making changes.
Contact criteria
Many steps support Apply to which contacts so the step only runs for contacts who match selected criteria.
Note: After adding a step to the map, click it to open the step editor on the right and configure the settings.

3 How to use it
Here are the steps:
- Open the journey and go to the relevant area in the left panel.
- Review the available options and how they affect the journey.
- Configure one test example in a draft journey.
- Save the changes, and confirm the behavior before using it in production.
4 Journey notes
- Decision split supports up to 10 total paths, including the default path.
- Every non-default decision path needs criteria. If any required path criteria are missing, the step is not considered configured and the journey cannot be started.
- If a contact does not match any defined decision path, the contact follows the default path.
- Engagement split checks the selected campaign event when the contact reaches the step. If you want to wait for engagement first, place a Wait until step before it using the same criteria.
- Random split is useful for A/B-style testing different journey paths in a single journey.
