1 Concepts

What this step does
The Random split step performs an action or controls flow inside a journey.

Step settings
Configure the step in the right-side editor, and click Save after making changes.

Contact criteria
Many steps support Apply to which contacts so the step only runs for contacts who match selected criteria.

Path setup
Use Set the paths, Add another path, and Divide equally to configure the split.

Note: After adding a step to the map, click it to open the step editor on the right and configure the settings.

2 How to use it

Here are the steps:

  1. Open the journey you want to work with.
  2. Locate the item in the journey map or add it from Add if it is not already on the map.
  3. Click the item to open the editor on the right side.
  4. Configure the settings for your use case, and then click Save.

3 Use cases and examples

Common use cases:

  • Branch contacts by behavior or profile criteria
  • Run A/B path tests with a random split
  • Rejoin multiple paths before a shared next step
Pro-tip: Keep the journey path simple first, and then add more conditions or branches after the basic flow is working.

4 Step notes

  • Random split is best for A/B-style testing inside a single journey path structure.
  • Keep your path percentages intentional and verify the totals before starting the journey.
  • Use clear path names so reporting and troubleshooting are easier later.

5 FAQ
